The NBA is the world's greatest basketball league — 30 teams, 82-game seasons and playoffs that produce legendary moments. If you're new to basketball, this beginner's guide has everything you need.
Basic Rules in 60 Seconds
Two teams of five score by shooting through the opponent's hoop — 2 points inside the arc, 3 points beyond it, 1 point per free throw. Games have four 12-minute quarters. Key violations: traveling (moving without dribbling), double dribble, and the 24-second shot clock forcing quick offense. Fouls give free throws; six fouls fouls a player out.
The 30 Teams
Teams split into Eastern and Western Conferences (15 each). Historic franchises include the LA Lakers and Boston Celtics (most championships), Chicago Bulls (Jordan era), Golden State Warriors (the three-point revolution), and rising powers like Oklahoma City and Minnesota. Every team plays 82 games from October to April.
Playoffs and the Finals
The top six teams per conference make the playoffs automatically; seeds 7-10 contest the Play-In Tournament for the last two spots. Playoff series are best-of-seven — first to four wins advances through three rounds to the conference finals, then the NBA Finals crown the champion in June. Playoff basketball is a different sport: defense tightens, stars play 40+ minutes, and legacies are made.
