"Storage almost full" — the most annoying notification on Earth. Before you panic-delete precious photos, work through this list in order. Most people can free 10–30GB in under half an hour without losing a single memory.
Step 1: Find the Culprit
Open Settings > Storage (both Android and iPhone show a clear breakdown). Knowledge first, deletion second: the usual suspects are photos and videos, WhatsApp media, offline streaming downloads, and games. Attack the biggest category first — that is where the gigabytes hide.
Photos: Back Up, Then Free
This is the biggest single win for most people. Turn on cloud backup with Google Photos or iCloud, verify the backup actually finished, then use the "free up space" option to remove local copies. Your photos stay safe in the cloud and accessible anytime — and 10–30GB reappears like magic.
Tame WhatsApp and Downloads
WhatsApp silently hoards gigabytes of forwarded videos. Turn off auto-download for media, then clear large files in WhatsApp's own storage settings. Delete offline Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube downloads you already watched, and empty your browser's downloads folder — it is a forgotten junk drawer.
Apps: Offload, Don't Just Delete
iPhone users: "Offload Unused Apps" removes the app but keeps your data. Android users can archive unused apps the same way. Delete finished games — your progress is usually saved in the cloud — and swap heavy apps for their lite versions when available. Be ruthless with apps you have not opened in three months.
The Rest of the 12
Clear app caches (Android lets you do this per app), delete old message attachments and voice notes, remove duplicate photos and screenshots, clear downloaded podcast episodes, and move files to an SD card or USB drive if your phone supports it. Each one is small; together they add up to gigabytes.
Prevent It Forever
Keep auto cloud backup switched on, do a 5-minute storage review once a month, stream instead of downloading whenever possible, and choose 128GB minimum on your next phone — 64GB is simply unlivable in 2026. Future you will never see that notification again.
